The Decline of Fast Food Innovation
Show transcript

Have you ever noticed that fast food these days is not just insanely priced but it's not really that innovative? Now I'm old enough, I'm 55 by the way, to remember a time back in the 80s and 90s when fast food was innovative. It was cheap, yes, but it was good. I mean not great for good for you but at least it was better than we have now. But at least they tried new things on a regular basis. McDonald's used to have deals of the month. They used to have this chicken fajita wrap, chicken fajita burrito, that was better than anything you could get from Taco Bell. And Taco Bell used to have some pretty good things back in the day. Burger King used to have a veal parmesan sandwich back in the early 80s that I literally, every time we went by Burger King, anytime I would beg my mom to get one. She's probably glad that that thing got off the menu. But they had, it was and it was up until like the turn of the century, maybe a little after that, that you had innovation. You had value menus. You had a real attempt to get the customer in the door and to try something you want to try. And now it's like, it's just there. It's like, we're McDonald's, you're gonna come to us anyway. So why should we occasionally, yeah, we'll have an old collaboration with somebody. We'll throw a little something here, something there. But it's not like it once was. And a lot of their food just sucks. And it's this huge gigantic corporate, we don't give a damn anymore. I could use a stronger profanity, but I won't. Not here. Burger King does tend to have that spirit a bit. By the way, their cheddar ranch tots, they've got out for the new Star Wars movie. The Mandalorian and whatever that, oh, I can't even think of the guys, little creature's name. I'm not a Star Wars fan, by the way. Those were actually good. I had them. The chicken fries, the garlic chicken fries, not so much. I'm usually a fan of garlic, but I wouldn't. But Wendy's had a syrup bar one time. They had like an Italian, Mexican, and salad bar that was actually really good. Was it the best Italian you're ever gonna get? No. Was it the best Mexican? No. But it was cheap, good, and innovative. But a lot of franchises, including the one we had in our area, they didn't run it for maybe two or three years because it was the overhead cost was too much for them. So it eventually died out. But KFC used to have buffets all over the place. Hardee's used to be really good until Carl's Jr. bought them out back in the early 2000s. And yeah, the only thing good about Hardee's nowadays is their breakfast. Their breakfast has always been legendary, but anything else? There's a reason why Hardee's is busy in the mornings and then in the afternoon and evenings. They used to not be that way. Wendy's used to have great stuff. Look back at the commercials in the 80s and 90s, and Dave Thomas was there. They constantly put out new stuff, and really good stuff, and stuff people really wanted. Stuff that would get people into the restaurant. Now it's like Wendy's is struggling for no good reason. The reason Wendy's is struggling is they don't care. They have their basics. Occasionally they'll throw a little something here, a little something there, but nothing truly innovative. Nothing like it used to be. And it's like they're insulting people. And now with the way the economy is, fast food is not convenient anymore. It's not cheap. Taco Bell used to be able to go there and have a feast for ten dollars. Now you're lucky if you get a halfway decent meal for ten dollars. Value menus have kind of come back a little bit. They're not really that valuable anymore. And trust me, I'm old enough. I can do the numbers. It's not just inflation. It's corporate greed. And trust me, when I get to that rant about corporate greed, yeah, this might take a few posts. All right, that's it for now. Bye-bye.
