Understanding Depression: A Conversation with Auntie Sunflower
Show transcript

Hey everyone, it's Auntie Sunflower. So let's talk about depression. I know, not a fun topic, but, you know, life is tough. So let's talk about depression. Now, what is depression? Depression is not just, oh, I feel sad today. Depression makes it hard to get out of bed,

do your daily life, have routines, have friendships. It creates isolation in your life. Why do people get depressed? I don't know. People get depressed for all sorts of reasons. I don't know. I'm not a doctor. But if you are feeling like you might have depression, you definitely

should go see your doctor and you should try to either get meds or natural remedies to help you out. Because sometimes you just can't do it by yourself. You can't survive by yourself. And so you need a little bit of help. I'm of the belief that I really don't care about medications. I

don't want to take medications. You know, and go to therapy. Therapy is not weak. You're not weak for being in therapy. You just need some objective outside of your own brain that can, you know, help you out, help you see things a different way. Now, if you are feeling like unaliving yourself,

I want you to go to Google and look up the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. You can call in there and they can get you help. Because whatever you're going through is not worth your life. I'm sorry. It's just not. If you know of somebody who's thinking about unaliving themselves,

then also connect them with the National Suicide Hotline. Talk to somebody. Get out of your own head. A lot of times people with anxiety have depression or people with ADHD have depression. Now, I'm not a medical person, but I do have clinical depression and I have clinical anxiety and I have ADHD and a little bit of OCD. So, I mean, I understand the struggle. And I'm gonna

be real open and real honest with you as your auntie. There was a time when I tried to, myself, you know, but God's got a plan. So, you know, you just, you've survived a hundred percent of your worst days. The thing that I did that helped me get out of depression, I was on meds for a while,

but it didn't work. For me, it made me feel more like a zombie and that's, that's pretty normal for like, you know, antidepressant meds. But what I did was every day I woke up, I did one thing. So, maybe I got up and I got dressed or maybe I got up and I showered. So, I did one thing every day and then I added some. So, after a week I would add something. Get up and get dressed and then,

you know, go take a shower or get up, get dressed and go take a walk. Get up, go get the mail, take a shower. Like, just little things that I could do until I had a list of things to do for the day. Get up, take a shower, get dressed, go get the mail, go eat some breakfast, go drink

some water. Like, things that are just basic everyday things, but that when you're in depression, you don't want to do. You don't have the motivation to do it. You're not weak for that. You're not broken for that. You're not stupid. You're not any of those things. But, if you are struggling

with depression or anxiety or any other mental health issue, please go get help. Do not be afraid to get help, to access help. And, if you don't know where to find help, you've got Google at the palm of your hands. Search Google. Figure out where there's help in your area. Talk to a friend. Talk

to a loved one. But, yeah, just talk to somebody because you are worth living and this world needs you in it. All right. Love always. On to Sunflower.
