Late night voice note to self. It's late again, or maybe I'm just tired enough to tell myself the truth. Hey there, I keep wanting to say I'm behind on this project, like there's this invisible deadline everyone else got the memo for except me.
Like the work has already boarded the train and I'm still on the platform, holding a laugh back-to-back. But tonight, I'm trying on a different story. What if I'm not behind? What if I'm just deep inside the part no one livestreams?
The part where the file is open, the idea is half-shaped, and I feel like I'm betraying it by not moving faster? I watch myself do the spiral again today, scrolling other people's finished things, translating their posted into my late, ignoring the fact that I'm seeing their end point
against my midpoint. At one point, I just stared at the screen and wanted to ghost the whole thing, project, pressure, versions of me that promised I'd be done by now. Instead, I asked a smaller question.
Okay, what's the next honest inch? Not the whole vision, not the perfect rollout, just the next inch that doesn't feel like a lie. And an answer came, very quietly, not as a big download, just a small shift.
Rename the file so it matches what it actually is now. Write one sentence that feels like skin, not costume. I did that. The project didn't magically finish itself, but the room felt less hostile, like I'd
moved from behind to with. And maybe that's all I get tonight, not a breakthrough, just the truth. So, here's what I want you to remember next time you say, I'm behind. You're not late to your own work, you're just arriving at a version of it that needs this version of you.
The delay isn't an indictment, it's calibration. If you can't do everything, do the next honest inch. Open the file, change one line, delete the sentence that feels like someone else, name the feeling instead of numbing it.
That counts. It all counts. I won't wrap this up with a lesson. I just want a record that on this night, in this half-lit room, I decided to stop bullying myself with the word behind and call it what it is.
In progress, inside the work, on time, for a timeline I don't yet understand.
